What is a volunteer?
A volunteer is a person who is willing to offer time and energy to support students and the schools. Volunteers must be at least 21 years of age.
Who makes a good volunteer?
Volunteers must enjoy working with children and value their achievements. Reliability is an important attribute. Both students and teachers rely upon volunteers to be in attendance when they agree to volunteer. A good volunteer sets a positive example for students.
Sample responsibilities of a volunteer:
∙ Assist the teacher with nonprofessional tasks
∙ Offer individual help that some children need in order to succeed
∙ Provide enrichment
∙ Stimulate support of public education
∙ Read to or with a student
∙ Assist with special school activities or events
Steps to be a VIPS:
1) Attend VIPS training session
2) Complete the VIPS application
3) Select VIPS level of responsibility
- VIPS Level 2: Complete background check application
4) Attend VIPS training. One training is required every two years. Review handbook and policy when you begin volunteering in a new school
5) Each building will provide orientation information specific to the building: where to park, sign-in process, map of building, etc.
